We are heading into the Arthur’s Pass National Park today where local blokes call this route the Speight’s Coast to Coast which is a hard man triathlon from the West Coast to the East Coast of the South Island, but we’ll be doing it in reverse on some of Milwaukee’s finest V twins.
DAY 2 Hokitika to Fox Glacier
Highway 6 with the Tasman Sea to your right and the majestic Southern Alps to your left we head into Glacier country. We stop on the way through to see the stunning Franz Josef Glacier where you will have an opportunity to go and see the majestic might of this glacier before heading onto Fox Glacier for the night.
DAY 3 Fox Glacier to Queenstown
The Gates of Haast and the spectacular Haast Pass waits as we head across the Mount Aspiring National Park, along the banks of Lake Wanaka and through to the Cardrona Valley where we take the Crown Range Road (the highest sealed road in New Zealand) down into Queenstown where we will be spending the night and taking a trip out on the TSS Earnslaw that evening to sample the delights of Lake Wakatipu and dining at Walter Peak Station.
Queenstown is the world’s adrenalin junkie’s epicentre and for the morning and early afternoon you are free to kick back and you have the opportunity to try something different, you are free to choose from the multitude of activities Queenstown has to offer. Late afternoon we then head off for the ride to Te Anau where we will spend the night.
Today we ride through the Fiordland National Park and into Milford Sounds, it is here that you take a boat cruise on these magnificent sounds. Milford Sound boasts 8 metres of rain per annum, so bring your wet weather gear or a wet suit!! The road to Milford Sounds is long and spectacularly beautiful ride, including a ride through the Homer Tunnel, which is 1.2 kilometres long. We then return to Te Anau for a second nights accommodation here.
From the barren tussock fields of Queenstown to the Lindis Pass, watch out for the big blue. The lakes south of Mount Cook simply blow you away. The ride through the Lindis Pass is great riding territory as you cut through the southern most access point through the Southern Alps. We will be spending the night in Lake Tekapo with its stunning views across the blue lake towards Mount Cook.
Take the long way home back to Christchurch where our tour ends. Overnight accommodation in Christchurch provided for this last night of the tour. |
